Justice Committee meets with Chairperson of Legal Aid Board & on Proposed approval of the Regulations & Directive of the European Parliament on international protection,asylum & migration

The Joint Committee on Justice chaired by Deputy James Lawless will meet tomorrow, Tuesday 30th April 2024 at 3pm in Committee Room 1 for engagement with Ms Nuala Egan, Chairperson Designate of the Aid Board and then on the Motion on Proposed approval by Dáil and Seanad Éireann of the proposal for Regulations and a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on international protection, asylum and migration.

The Committee will hear from representatives from:

·       Nasc, the Migrant and Refugee Rights Centre,

·       David Leonard BL,

·       Irish Refugee Council

·       Migrant Rights Centre Ireland

·       UNHCR Ireland

Speaking ahead of the meeting Committee Cathaoirleach, James Lawless TD said “In our first session tomorrow we look forward to welcoming the Chairperson Designate Ms Nuala Egan tomorrow. The Committee will take the opportunity to discuss her plans and strategies for the coming period and will look to her to outline what she will implement to address any challenges facing the Legal Aid Board both short and long-term.

“In the second session, we will resume our engagement on the proposed approval by both Houses of the Oireachtas of the proposal for Regulations and a Directive of the European Parliament and Council on international protection, asylum and migration. Following on from last week’s meeting we will welcome stakeholders who represent the Migrants and Refugees that will be directly impacted by these Regulations and Directive.”
